Six areas of the two story foyer and how to decorate them
There have been a lot of homes built in Texas over the last 10 years and a lot of them have 2 story foyers. Two story foyers can be a challenge to decorate. One of the reasons two story foyers seem so difficult to decorate is because there is so much drywall.
As an interior designer I look at it as a way to do something dramatic with the large wall area. Below I will discuss the different areas of the foyer and some options on how to decorate them.
Artwork - Dramatic artwork can be used to add excitement to your foyer. Fewer large pieces of decorative art like a tapestry can give you a dramatic look as well. Below you can see how I used hand painted glass panels over an archway in the foyer.
Paint treatments - Paint treatments can add some interest and detail to the walls without being too much. Good choices for a formal foyer are venetian plaster or metallic glaze on tissue paper.
Murals - Murals can be expensive, but when done by an expert muralist they can be amazing.
Wallpaper - Wallpaper is a good choice for a two story foyer, but there are a lot of people who do not like wallpaper. I can understand that, but if you feel that way you might give it a second look. Wallpaper is getting more popular today because there are a lot of new quality wall coverings that have beautiful subtle tone on tone patterns.
A ceiling with architectural detailing or a paint treatment can add that WOW factor to your foyer. Moulding can be added to most foyers to add interest. It is best to consult with a professional when adding details like moulding to your ceiling. You must consider how that detail will work with the rest of the foyer and the rest of your home.
A beautiful foyer table or a bombay chest is a way to add more functional detail. A unique bench can add beauty and also be a good place for a guest to take off or put on their shoes. A magnificent mirror will also add a lot to your two story foyer and it is nice for guests to adjust their hair when coming into your home.
4. ENTRY RUG
A hand knotted wool rug can add that dramatic touch when someone comes in the door and will stand up to a lot of traffic .
I recommend a high end wool rug that may need to be professionally cleaned once in a while. These luxury rugs are available in traditional as well as contemporary styling. Wool rugs shrug off dirt and are so practical as well as beautiful in front of your foyer door.
Lighting is one of the most important parts of interior design.
In the foyer you might use a chandelier, sconces and a table lamp. The foyer sets the tone for the rest of the home and having the proper lighting is critical. When selecting a chandelier for your foyer it is best to seek professional help. A professional interior designer will make sure you end up with a chandelier that is the right scale, styling and finish for your home. Selecting the right sconces and table lamps are the finishing touches that will create a warm welcome for your guests.
Decoratiive accessories are the jewery of interior design.
Some of the accessories that can be added to your foyer are a vase, decorative box, large floral, umbrella stand or pedestal with a sculpture. This is another area where a professional interior designer will have the resources and the talent to make your two story foyer outstanding.
