The Coordination of Interior Design and Kitchen Design will help you avoid costly mistakes.
It is important that the kitchen design and the interior design are planned out together.
The style and the colors used in a kitchen will determine what can be done in adjoining areas like the dinette, family room, foyer and dining room in most homes. This is why you need a master plan. It is a good idea to work with a professional interior designer early in your project. They would be the best professional to coordinate your kitchen design with the interior design throughout your home.
Proper planning is the key to having your project turn out like you want it to and it can make the whole house look better.
Here are some of the things that need to be coordinated:
Space Planning- How many people do you need room for in your kitchen? Do you cook alone or is it a group effort? How does the layout of your kitchen work with your furniture plan? Is there enough room for your dinette table and chairs? How does the traffic flow work from your kitchen to your family room? How much room do you need for bar or counterstools? Is there room for a kitchen
Color selection- Color selections for cabinet finish, flooring, backsplash and countertops are pretty permanent so you need to make sure that these selections will work with your overall interior design plans. There are many countertop types to choose from such as granite, ceramic tile, corian, butcher block wood, cement, marble and the list goes on and on. There are many granites that are very beautiful as well as ceramic tile designs.
Lighting- Your kitchen designer and your interior designer need to coordinate the placement and the type of lighting for functional and aesthetic reasons. Do you want pendant lights over your island? Do you need a large chandelier or would it be better to use two smaller chandeliers?
Architectural Design- How does the design of the kitchen work with the architecture of the house? Is there a good flow from the kitchen to the dinette and to the dining room? Do you need a pantry or a wine cooler? How will your refrigerator fit in with your cabinets? Do you have room for a small booth in your kitchen area? Or do you want to fit in a desk area?
Special Details- Coordination of special details like design and fabrics for a custom booth (see below).are things a good interior designer can help you with. Booths can be made to be very traditional or very contemporary. It just depends on the style you want in your kitchen.
As you can see there are a lot of reasons to coordinate the kitchen design and the interior design early in your project. This coordination will help you avoid costly mistakes.
For this client I designed a comfortable custom booth.
The kitchen designer suggested two islands for this client and I designed the ceiling to emulate the shape of the islands. I also selected the backsplash, counter tops, cabinet colors, lighting, draperies, flooring and furniture based on the client's wants and needs.
We used the colors in the slate backsplash and the granite in the adjoining rooms.
This kitchen coordinates well with the dinette and the family room.
