A question that is very common is "how do I decorate my home with artwork?

How do I know what size artwork will be perfect in my room? Where can I get a good oil painting or a beautiful print?  Should I have my artwork covered with glass or is it best to get an oil painting?

One of the most important parts of your home is the artwork.  Whether it is very large or a group of smaller paintings, it is so important in the room.  It helps make the room look good and it is a great way to bring out your personal style.

A picture gallery can be a great way to handle a large wall.  Pictures should be different sizes and can have different frames, depending on your look. Or, if you want your picture wall to be uniform, be sure all the pictures have matching frames and mats.

First place the pictures on the floor.  Measure the size of the area you want to cover.  Next, place the largest and most dominant picture near the center and bottom of your grouping.  Do not place it at the center unless you are doing a symmetrical grouping.

Next, start working other pictures around the main one.  Some may be vertical, others may be horizontal.  Try to keep the same spacing between the pictures.  I suggest around 4” or 5” between pictures.  Work the pictures until they form a shape that looks good as a whole.

It is a good idea to have all the frames match but they don't have to.  If you have a photo gallery with all white or black frames that seems to work well and makes everything flow a little bit better.

Symmetrical groupings are easy and can work great over a fireplace, a buffet or a dresser.  If you have a large fireplace, then you should also have a large picture or work of art.  Many people want to have a large and beautiful, ornately decorated mirror over their fireplace. Others prefer to have 2 matching pictures to go vertical on their walls.  Whatever you do, be sure that the artwork is the right size for your room.  Remember a large wall will take a large picture or maybe a series of 3 pictures that all work together.

Then be sure to stand back and see how the artwork looks in your room.  This is where the trained eye of a professional interior designer comes in handy.  They would know the right size to use on each wall.

As you can see, there are many different ways to use beautiful artwork in your home.  The best thing to do is to call a professional interior designer who will be sure the size and frame and matting all go together to create a beautiful scene in your home.
